The Chedworth Society
WELCOMES YOU

Chedworth is a living village with a vibrant community enjoying the benefits of an active church; an excellent primary school; a traditional village pub; and numerous leisure activities, sports clubs / associations / societies.
Within this environment the Chedworth Society is a valuable part of the community.
It fulfils the role of an amenity group; being concerned with planning issues affecting the conservation of the village and its surroundings: and combines this with a social side organising talks and visits covering a variety of general interest topics.
The Society welcomes new members who would like to support its objectives and anyone who is interested will be made most welcome.
MEMBERSHIP
The Chedworth Society welcomes new members.
We currently have over 170 paid up members; a ten-strong working committee and an active planning sub committee.
We organise outings to places of interest and occasional talks for members and friends: such activities, plus the annual dinner and the obligatory open AGM, make up a full diary of local events and interest.
The annual membership fee (2008) is just £2.00 per person and is probably the best-value around.
Please contact Mr Frank Beer(Hon Sec): Tel 01285 720 426 for details; or chat to any of the committee members.

PLANNING COMMITTEE
We have an active planning sub-committee which reviews planning applications affecting the conservation area of the village.
The Society’s considered opinion is solicited by Cotswold District Council as an official voice and we engage in dialogue with CDC to help ensure that the visual appeal of the village is protected. The fund of local knowledge within the society is an important element in debating planning issues.
In 2008 the committee has so far reviewed a total of 35 planning and tree felling applications: this compares with a total of 45 applications in the whole of last year.

THIS MONTH’S NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2010
When a typical image of rural England is required, there is a strong
chance that the outcome will be a parish church, set against the
backdrop of a summer pasture, and with its clock slowly chiming four
in the afternoon. OK, a bit syrupy, but the scene could certainly be
shot here in Chedworth. However, such an image is not limited just
to the summer months. During the long period of frosty, calm, nights
over the past couple of months, the clock seems to have had an extra
clarity - each hourly toll reaffirming the central place of the Church
within the Village. So where am I going with all of this?

Well, I say let’s hear it for one unsung hero of our
Community – Malcolm Brown. Each Thursday
night, as regular as clockwork (sorry, but it just
had to be said), he climbs to the top of the Bell
Tower to wind up the clock and chime
mechanisms, before resetting the minute hand.
Now for the record, it takes 56 turns of the
handle to raise each of the 50(-ish) pound
weights the full height of the tower to keep the
clock going for a week. And, yes, I’m bound to
observe that Malcolm is left just a bit breathless
in the process. So, while many of us might have
a dull, green, LED glow to set out the time, in my
view there is still very much a place for the
church clock ticking away at the heart of our
community. And it’s all down to Malcolm.
This subject of time steers me to highlight that the re-scheduled AGM
of the Society will take place at 7:30 pm on 24 March 2010 at the
Seven Tuns Inn. As mentioned previously, members are especially
requested to attend this meeting, in that we are seeking adoption of
the 2009 Review of the Society. If approved, the document will help
steer the Society in its future work and organisation. Equally, the
Committee will be eager to hear the views of members as to how we
should move forward. Please let me or our Secretary, Frank Beer
(720426 frank.beer@btinternet.com), know of any aspects you would
wish to raise.

THE 2009 REVIEW OF
THE CHEDWORTH SOCIETY
The Chedworth Society has developed over the past 40 years on an informal basis during a period of rapid change. In these circumstances, it was timely to carry out a full review of its principles and output, with the aim of determining how best the Society should continue to support the Parish. . . . . . . . .
