The Chedworth Society

WELCOMES YOU

The Seven Tunns

Chedworth is a living village with a vibrant community enjoying the benefits of an active church; an excellent primary school; a traditional village pub; and numerous leisure activities, sports clubs / associations / societies.

Within this environment the Chedworth Society is a valuable part of the community.
It fulfils the role of an amenity group; being concerned with planning issues affecting the conservation of the village and its surroundings: and combines this with a social side organising talks and visits covering a variety of general interest topics.

The Society welcomes new members who would like to support its objectives and anyone who is interested will be made most welcome.

MEMBERSHIP

The Chedworth Society  welcomes new members.
We currently have over 170 paid up members; a ten-strong working committee and an active planning sub committee.

We organise outings to places of interest and occasional talks for members and friends: such activities, plus the annual dinner and the obligatory open AGM, make up a full diary of local events and interest.

The annual membership fee (2008) is just £2.00 per person and is probably the best-value around.

Please contact Mr Frank Beer(Hon Sec): Tel 01285 720 426 for details; or chat to any of the committee members.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CHEDWORTH SOCIETY

The following objectives are extracted directly from the Constitution document:

The objects of the society shall be to promote and encourage the following  objects (sic) by charitable means but not otherwise:

  1. To preserve and enhance the character of the parish of Chedworth and its surrounding countryside and to improve in every way possible its appearance and amenities.

  2. The secure the support of and co-operate with bodies local and national whose functions or interests affect or are compatible with the objects of the Society.

  3. To stimulate public consciousness and appreciation of the beauty, history and character of Chedworth and its surroundings.

  4. To encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general public amenity or historic interest.

  5. To encourage a strong public opinion in support of the above objects.

  6. To pursue these ends by means of meetings, exhibitions, lectures and the promotion of schemes of a charitable nature

PLANNING COMMITTEE

Planning ApplicationWe have an active planning sub-committee which reviews planning applications affecting the conservation area of the village.

The Society’s considered opinion is solicited by Cotswold District Council as an official voice and we engage in dialogue with CDC to help ensure that the visual appeal of the village is protected. The fund of local knowledge within the society is an important element in debating planning issues.

In 2008 the committee has so far reviewed a total of 35 planning and tree felling applications: this compares with a total of 45 applications in the whole of last year.

THIS MONTH’S NEWSLETTER

JULY & AUGUST 2008

Firstly I wish to remind members that the visit on Friday evening 18th July has been cancelled, but the Talk on Chedworth Railway is scheduled for Friday evening 17th October. This should be a fascinating talk about wartime Chedworth with trains carrying munitions and troops through Chedworth to the ports on the south coast. Non-members are also welcome to attend this talk and should get in touch with me should they wish to come (720440).

May I also remind members about Mike Tovey’s History Workshop on the Enclosure Act on Wednesday evening 22nd October. This should be a most interesting evening on how this act affected Chedworth and rural England.

Woburn AbbeyAlso, I wish to remind members of our two coach trips; firstly Woburn Abbey on Tuesday, 19th August and secondly our visit to Herefordshire on Tuesday, 30th September. Both visits should provide great days out and members and guests for both are welcome. Those interested who have not already put their names down should contact me on the above number.

Members will already be aware of the sad death of dear Brenda Rosenthal. Graham has already given a generous donation to the Society to be spent on something to keep the memory of Brenda alive. This with our own contribution is to be discussed at our next GCM but if any member has some ideas of how the money can be spent to perpetuate Brenda’s memory please get in touch with me.

Lastly, may I remind members that those who have not already paid their subscription should do so as soon as possible.

E.M. Broughton. (Chairman)
