The Chedworth Society
WELCOMES YOU

Chedworth is a living village with a vibrant community enjoying the benefits of an active church; an excellent primary school; a traditional village pub; and numerous leisure activities, sports clubs / associations / societies.
Within this environment the Chedworth Society is a valuable part of the community.
It fulfils the role of an amenity group; being concerned with planning issues affecting the conservation of the village and its surroundings: and combines this with a social side organising talks and visits covering a variety of general interest topics.
The Society welcomes new members who would like to support its objectives and anyone who is interested will be made most welcome.
MEMBERSHIP
The Chedworth Society welcomes new members.
We currently have over 170 paid up members; a ten-strong working committee and an active planning sub committee.
We organise outings to places of interest and occasional talks for members and friends: such activities, plus the annual dinner and the obligatory open AGM, make up a full diary of local events and interest.
The annual membership fee (2008) is just £2.00 per person and is probably the best-value around.
Please contact Mr Frank Beer(Hon Sec): Tel 01285 720 426 for details; or chat to any of the committee members.

PLANNING COMMITTEE
We have an active planning sub-committee which reviews planning applications affecting the conservation area of the village.
The Society’s considered opinion is solicited by Cotswold District Council as an official voice and we engage in dialogue with CDC to help ensure that the visual appeal of the village is protected. The fund of local knowledge within the society is an important element in debating planning issues.
In 2008 the committee has so far reviewed a total of 35 planning and tree felling applications: this compares with a total of 45 applications in the whole of last year.

THIS MONTH’S NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 2010
I’m very pleased to say that we have now turned words into some
actions regarding the water wheel. Over the past month or so, we
have removed the over-growth on the wheel enclosure and the water
course running down to the road. As least we then had a clearer idea
of what we were facing. Not that the basic issue was difficult to
determine – namely, the whole wheel was encased in a thick layer of
Tufa. Fortunately, while in a sodden state, this could be
chipped/chiselled/hammered (gently) away over a recent weekend by
a willing group of volunteers. Slowly, but surely, it started to turn
again. This was indeed a pleasing moment.
So where does this leave the wheel’s longer term future?. Well, for
the moment, the option to remove the wheel permanently from the
site has taken a few steps backward. In turn, the ‘restore to previous
(1995) state’ now looks more encouraging. And the idea of having
some form of output remains on the list (however remote this seems
at the moment). But the list of obstacles to be overcome is just as
long. For example, the bearings and axle need total
renovation/replacement, and the enclosure needs a close inspection
by a qualified structural engineer to make sure it’s safe. And as for
the Tufa, well...
Less obvious, the wheel is likely to need some form of loading to stop
it spinning off any new super efficient bearings, and ending up in the
snug bar at the Tuns. And that’s before the issue of funding is even
mentioned. So it’s still an open issue as to what happens to the
wheel, but the future is just that little bit brighter. Oh! and the other
idea in the offing is to create some shallow pools within the water
course to promote native aquatic life.
If you have any comments or views about the water wheel project or
any other aspect of the Society’s work, then I or any of our
Committee members would be delighted to hear from you.

THE 2009 REVIEW OF
THE CHEDWORTH SOCIETY
The Chedworth Society has developed over the past 40 years on an informal basis during a period of rapid change. In these circumstances, it was timely to carry out a full review of its principles and output, with the aim of determining how best the Society should continue to support the Parish. . . . . . . . .
