CHEDWORTH VILLAGE

Chedworth

The village of Chedworth is in the County of Gloucestershire, 7 miles from Cirencester, 5 miles from Northleach and eleven miles from Cheltenham. It is close to the Roman Fosse Way and is roughly 600 feet above sea level.

Chedworth is an attractive Cotswold village, with old and modern Cotswold stone houses hugging the steep sides of the valley which extends for almost 2 miles along a tributary of the River Coln.
Unlike many of the villages in the Cotswolds, Chedworth remains unspoilt and off the beaten track apart from Chedworth Roman Villa which as the crow flies is less than a mile from the nearest house, whilst by road it is approximately 4.5 miles.

Chedworth is a thriving community and has a village school, church, pub and a wide range of clubs and societies.

Below are some useful links to the village.

SHOULD THE PARISH COUNCIL LEASE ADDITIONAL LAND TO THE TENNIS CLUB
FOR AN ADDITIONAL COURT?

The Hill & Valley Tennis Club was formed in 1985 and has been pleased to provide two tennis courts for use by its members and the community as a whole through temporary membership and relationship with the school during this time.

The club has recently received the prestigious Clubmark award because of its integration in the local community and the professional way in which it is managed. It is involved with Chedworth School on a regular basis and this year alone provided coaching for over 40 children and young people as well as for many adults. We entered 3 teams in the Summer Leagues to stretch those who would like to improve their tennis further.

However such a wealth of activity and a membership of 160+ , the vast majority of whom live in the village, means that our facilities are at times greatly stretched and we are well above the LTA suggested maximum of 60 members per court. Many of our members are only able to play outside working or school hours, which is when team matches and club events have to be scheduled. This has become a frustration and the club is essentially a victim of its own success. Therefore after canvassing members views the club has decided it would like to build an additional floodlit court to the north of and adjoining the existing courts. Floodlights are necessary in order to obtain financial support from the Lawn Tennis Association and are not expected to be used too frequently.

This has been discussed with the Parish Council and they are sympathetic in principle to enlarging the parcel of land we currently lease from them. However they would like evidence that this proposal is acceptable to the wider community. The additional land would adjoin the existing courts on the north west side so it would not interfere with the football pitch.

Therefore it would be extremely helpful if you could say whether you are in favour or not by E-mailing fredshaftoe@gmail.com or writing to Fred Shaftoe, Camellia House, Fields Rd, Chedworth, GL54 4NQ .Please make any comments that you may think would be of value.
